Field Maintenance Update Mar 25, 2021 – Field Closure! from Dave Anderson

First, a big shout out to Courtney Smith and his idea to use soda ash on the runway to kill the moss. Looks like that did the trick! We are on the schedule with resealing the runway as soon as the contractor is ready to go this year, weather dependent – but sometime late April or May. We will need to do a little work to remove portions of the white striping at the approach ends before the sealing is done. If anyone is interested in helping with that, please let me know.
New rock will be delivered to repair the road 0900 tomorrow morning, thanks to Rolando’s friend Chris. I am looking for a couple of people that are flexible in their schedule tomorrow or Sat that are willing to help move a little rock. Chris assures me it will take minimal labor in the way he is able to pour the rock accurately down the road. If you can help, or know someone who can, please contact me right away. I have to work around his business schedule to get this done. You’ll need a garden rake, a shovel, and a wheelbarrow if you can.
On Saturday, we will be trimming the edges of the runway to remove the overgrown grass and prepare for the resealing. Thanks to Keith Ward on this effort. The runway will need to be closed for this work. We plan to begin at 8 AM and work until at least after lunch. Keith is a working man, so this must be done on the weekend, and we may need to finish up on Sunday. If you are able to help with shovels and rakes and wheelbarrows to move new dirt to renew the edge on the repaired runway, please let me know immediately. I really need some help on this.
The shelter is ready to be painted. This will include the rafters (if I am able to get the moss removed), the frequency board, the bench and picnic table. This work will start at about noon on Sunday, so if you have time in your schedule to assist, please let me know. You’ll need your latex brush, and a small bucket. Bring a ladder if you can. Thanks to Pat Sperling, Larry Riehl, Mel Decker and Tom O’Neal for responding already.
I am getting quotes for maintenance of the grass this year. The club will make a decision if that is appropriate or if we should purchase a riding mower and make it available for use as we need it out there. I think we can all step up to take responsibility in some way to help keep the grass maintained this year, and I hope I can count of many of you to recognize this need and help out. If contractor maintenance does not pan out, we’ll look at securing the mower somewhere appropriate in the area so it is accessible to anyone who wants to spend a little time cutting down all that green stuff! If you know of a lead on a reliable used riding mower with at least a 42″ deck, please let me know.
Next we’ll need to repair the tables and paint them. This project will commence sometime next month. If you can help with that project, let me know. Thanks to Dave Agar and his wife Kathy on projects I have associated with that work.
Let’s make it a great year for flying with a renewed field! I appreciate everyone who has helped already, and can in the future!
